Week of 10/23

C has been working on advocating for breaks for himself-- and then picking his midair poses. Can you guess what animal this is?

Second grade celebration of learning last week-- putting our learners in the spotlight!

It's a second grade focused week for our photo spotlights. The sensory room (aka Kathryn's office) is a busy place most days, but one of the most interesting things is how often you might look in and see students not jumping on the trampoline, but curled up in the tent, or under a weighted blanket. We all need some different inputs each day, and I'm grateful for this place in our school where students can find what they need. You are always welcome to come try some of the things yourself!

The other photos are admittedly from last week, but they didn't make the micro-newsletter due to fall break. It was great having so many families in the building for the second grade celebration of learning, and they were all so impressed by the quality of the writing. Thanks for all that you all do to make learning real for our students.

Behavior Tip of the Week!
Co-regulation strategy for teachers when class feels overwhelming. Take 5 minutes to co-regulate with your class when you and your students feel overwhelmed, anxious, rushed, tired, etc. Whatever big feelings you and your students might be having at the time, take a moment to pause, reflect on how you're feeling, and take at least 3-5 minutes to focus on the present moment.

Some ideas you can do for mindfulness as a class could be:
1. Use a breathing ball, rainbow breathing, or other breathing tool to take deep breaths as a class (students can close their eyes)
2. Turn down the lights in your room and put on a calming nature video with sounds (you and your students can choose to be mindful in either watching the video with the calming movements of waterfalls, birds flying in the sky, walking through the trees and more. Or simply close your eyes and listen to the sounds you might hear.
3. Mindful coloring: There are so many awesome mindful coloring sheets you can choose from on google. Focused Kids also has a great mindful coloring book.
4. Body Scan-As a class teachers can use a meditation script to facilitate a body scan meditation for kids and teachers to be mindful of their movements/ their body, their thoughts, and the way their body feels throughout the scan.

(from Kendall, an add-on---- this crossed my email inbox recently, and I loved it as a new way to look at five finger breathing!)

shoutouts and fun!

Today during the lockdown drill in Hannah's, some were asking why we would have a lock down and one reason we said was in case an animal got in the school. One student said "Like a bear?" then Jeremy says "or like an elephant?!!"

I want to shout out Annie for seeing the scheduling conflicts with the performance and putting together a fix that will work for classroom teachers.

the pure joy of chasing butterflies!
